About the Academic Freedom Initiative

The MESA Academic Freedom Initiative offers datasets tracking threats to academic freedom in higher education in the U.S. and Canada. It also provides research and analysis of campus climate, academic freedom, and related policy changes at universities and colleges across North America since October 7, 2023.

Our datasets document attacks on academic freedom including instances of individual repression and retaliation against employees of higher education institutions, event cancellation, Title VI litigation, and federal pressure.

You can also find articles, analyses, and know your rights resources from trusted partner organizations.

Academic institutional affiliations are provided solely for informational purposes, and do not imply institutional endorsement or association with the project.
